The People’s Cup races towards the Gold Coast
Gold Coast will join racing history when it plays host to the $200,000, 18-carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup this week as part of the 17th annual Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.
Accompanied by Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Ambassador and dual Melbourne Cup-winning jockey John Letts, the People’s Cup will visit the coastal city tomorrow and engage in a number of community activities.
The iconic trophy will kick off its tour attending a morning tea event at the Institute for Glycomics before heading to the Palazzo Versace for a Women in Racing Luncheon.
In the afternoon the coveted trophy will make its way to Cavill Avenue, where Lexus Ambassador Emma Freedman will join Letts for a public activation giving locals the opportunity to hold the Cup and indulge in Attica chef Ben Shewry’s unique Chewy Carrot Canapés.
With the beaches of Surfer’s Paradise as a backdrop, the event is part of Lexus’ Making of Amazing campaign, with Shewry’s canapés a representation of the 2019 Lexus Design Pavilion’s.
On Saturday the iconic trophy will journey to Gold Coast Turf Club and attend Griffith University Student Guild Raceday, where the Cup will be paraded in the Mounting Yard and racegoers will have the opportunity to take photos with the Cup.
Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chief Executive Officer Neil Wilson said the Club is looking forward to sharing the iconic trophy with the Gold Coast community.
“The Lexus Melbourne Cup holds a special place in the heart of many Australians and it is only fitting we take the Cup and its rich history on a journey to meet the people who share our love for the great race,” Mr Wilson said.
Since its inaugural year in 2003, the Tour has travelled more than 600,000 kilometres and visited more than 450 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations, providing communities with a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic of the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
