Tabassi upsets hot favourite
ODDS-ON favourite Audacious Spirit was beaten first-up at the Gold Coast this afternoon when he just failed to hold off the Matt Dunn-trained Tabassi.
Punters rallied behind the Gillian Heinrich-trained Audacious Spirit in the 25 August Gold Coast City Cup Raceday Class 3 Plate (1100m), sending out the four-year-old a $1.50 favourite.
Drawn the outside gate in the 11-horse field and carrying 59kg, Audacious Spirit sat outside the leader Vaarwel until seemingly taking control of the race in the straight. But just when he looked certain to score, Tabassi ($9) stormed home late to score by a neck with Forbidden Dragon ($26) a half-length away third.
Neil Jenkinson, representing Tabassi’s Glenlogan Park Stud Syndicate, said the race panned out perfectly for the mare.
“We knew there was a lot of speed in the race and decided to ride her off the pace today,’’ he said.
“I guess the alley brought the favourite undone – if he draws inside he probably wins comfortably.’’
Today’s victory was the fourth win from 13 starts for Tabassi, a four-year-old daughter of Jet Spur.
