Retune upstages fancied stablemate
TOPWEIGHT Retune upset his more fancied stablemate to post a strong win in today’s Coca-Cola Class 2 Hcp (1800m) at the Gold Coast.
Gold Coast trainer David Kelly saddled up two runners in the race – the well-backed equal favourite Just Pure Magic ($3.50 into $2.40) and Retune, who eased from his opening quote of $4.60 to start at $7.
The Bevan Laming-trained Fuma ($4.40 into eq fav $2.40) also had solid support but finished unplaced.
Retune, carrying the 59kg topweight and drawn out in barrier 11, had the others covered comfortably at the 200m and swept passed Alkiori ($13) and Just Pure Magic to score by 1-3/4 lengths.
Part-owner Chris Small, who has an interest in both Kelly horses, had to laugh after the race.
“I backed them both but had a bigger bet on Just Pure Magic,’’ he said. “We preferred the other one as the better chance, but Retune’s done a good job to win the way he has.’’
