Mr Slick still young at heart
REJUVENATED sprinter Mr Slick posted the 10th win of his career when he prevailed in a desperate four-horse finish to today’s Mel Eggleston Benchmark 80 Hcp (1400m) at the Gold Coast.
“He’s an eight-year-old, but he doesn’t know it,’’ said trainer David Scanes, who has had the gelding racing in great fashion this campaign.
“These 1400m races here at the Gold Coast suit him down to the ground.’’
Scanes took Mr Slick to Sydney in December for two runs and he wasn’t disgraced in his efforts at Rosehill.
“He copped a knock and almost fell during his second start down there and probably should have won,’’ said Scanes. “That’s one of the good things about today’s win – it’ll give him his confidence back after that Sydney run.’’
Ridden today by Dale Missen, Mr Slick ($5.50) settled back in the field but charged home along the inside to edge out Lucky Songs ($4) by a half head. There was only a short neck to Newsnight ($13) in third with a short half-head to My Elixa ($5) in fourth.
Mr Slick gave Missen the second leg of winning double after his earlier win on the Noel Doyle-trained Noble Jester in the Bryan Guy Class 2 Hcp (1800m).
