COUP Rayvan bounced back from a luckless run in last month’s rich Magic Millions Maiden to break through in fine style at the Gold Coast this afternoon.
Trainer Bevan Laming was still lamenting his bad luck after Coup Rayvan struck early trouble and lost his winning chance when resuming in the $100,000 Magic Millions Maiden Plate at the Gold Coast on January 14.
“He was right next to that horse of Gai Waterhouse’s (Light Warrior) who bucked soon after the start of that Magic Millions race and caused trouble,’’ said Laming.
“That race was worth $100,000 and we’ve won a race today worth $10,000 – that’s racing, I suppose.’’
Laming paid $80,000 for the son of Cape Cross at the 2008 Magic Millions sale. The five-year-old is raced by his wife Jenny and Richard Coupland.
“He’s had a few joint problems and was only having his fifth start today, but he can gallop,’’ said Laming.
Ridden by 2kg-claiming apprentice Tegan Harrison, Coup Rayvan ($2.40 into $1.60 fav) led throughout in today’s Trevor Bailey Maiden Hcp (900m) to score by 1-3/4 lengths from Heart Throb ($5) with three-quarters of a length to Rye Filly Ours ($26) in third.
It was a quick turnaround to Harrison’s fortunes after being beaten on the $1.40 favourite in the previous race.
